6 Loudspeaker cabinets

6.3 Configurations

Bass speakers come in different sizes. Standardised sizes are 8, 10, 12, 15 and 18 inch. Often the smaller drivers are used in multiples.

A general rule is: the larger the speaker, the lower the bass response; the smaller the speaker, the better the treble response. However, with multiple smaller speakers grouped together there is an acoustic coupling effect, which contributes to the low frequency response. That's why many bass players prefer 4 x 10" cabinets. They combine the best of both worlds, so to speak. The small drivers sound bright and punchy individually, but together couple into a virtual large cone driver, which increases low end 6.10 Efficiency and sensitivity.
